The May 12 Believe in Blue Gala booth was a hub of activity during last Friday’s Blue Ties Breakfast.  Almost 400 Dads and boys  walked by the booth and saw many exciting prizes donated for the auction.   Since the Gala is sold out, many Dads wondered how they could bid.  Gala Volunteers explained that there are 2 ways everyone can participate.

• First, there is an on-line auction open to everyone
• Second we are accepting Proxy bids for all auction items.

Electric News on UCC Campus

UCC Prep boys have been coming home asking how they can win the Chevrolet Volt – Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) which has been seen wrapped up with a bow and parked on the sidewalk in front of the UCC Prep School this week.  The Upper School boys will also have a chance to see all the excitement when the Volt is moved to the Upper School.

These revolutionary cars are sold out in dealerships until 2013 – so the only way to own the Chevrolet Volt is to win it in the UCC Believe in Blue Gala Raffle.  The Chevrolet Volt, valued at over $40,000 has been generously donated by: City Buick Chevrolet Cadillac – John ‘71 and Michael ’97 Carmichael.  The Volt was also on Campus for the launch of the UCC Believe in Blue Raffle during A-Day last October.  If you want to learn more about the Volt, take a look the video below to see what Micheal has to say:

1. What is a  Plug in Hybrid – It’s a car that has an electric plug in, as well as a gas motor.

Red Velvet Valentine's Day Crepes

Ingredients

• 2 eggs
• 1 egg yolk
• 1 cup milk
• 1/2 cup water
• pinch salt
• 3 Tablespoons butter, melted
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• dash of vanilla
• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 1½ Tablespoon Cocoa Powder
• red food color
• extra butter to cook with
• Raspberry Preserves
• Sweet Cream Cheese Filling
• chocolate

Sweet Cream Cheese Filling

• 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
• ½ tsp lemon juice
• 2 cups powdered sugar
• 1/ 2 cup ricotta
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 2 Tbsp strong coffee

Instructions

1. Combine 2 eggs + 1 egg yolk, milk, water, salt, sugar, vanilla food color, and melted butter in a blender and pulse until foamy.
2. Add flour and cocoa powder and pulse until smooth. Let the batter sit for an hour.
3. Prepare Cream Cheese Filling by mixing all filling ingredients with mixer until well combined and smooth, set aside.
4. After batter sits for one hour, heat a small non-stick pan. Add butter to coat. Pour 1 ounce of batter into the center of the pan and swirl to spread evenly. Cook until the top loses its gloss, which should only take a minute, then flip. The bottom should be golden. Cook the other side for about 15 seconds and then slide out onto a plate.
5. Repeat with remaining batter.
6. Prepare crepes by spreading a one inch wide strip of raspberry preserves down center of crepe, then top with cream cheese filling.
7. Fold each side of crepe over filling and plate.
8. Melt Chocoate in microwave on Medium for about 60 seconds and drizzle over crepes.

Believe in Blue Gala Sold Out – Thank you to our Community

Hi.  I’m Michelle Meneley, and along with my husband Pat, we’re your Believe in
Blue Gala Co-Chairs.  We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the
UCC Community for your enthusiastic support.  Pat and I were overwhelmed
with the response from the UCC Community and the efforts of the Gala
Steering Committee.

While it seems like the event sold out in a couple of weeks, there really has been a team of over 50 dedicated volunteers working on this event for the past nine months, and I would like to thank those volunteers for their exceptional efforts.

Since May 2011, the Gala Steering Committee and volunteers have been planning and executing all aspects of the Gala from evaluating venues, catering and entertainment; to securing sponsors and donors; to creating and developing the marketing material.   Marketing efforts to the UCC Community began in June 2011 with a “Save the Date” announcement in “Head’s Up” and there has been a steady stream of Gala
announcements, notices and activity since them.  You may have seen notices for the Gala in UCC publications as there have been over 24 ads and articles published.   Below are some samples of the Gala Ads.

For those who have their Gala tickets, we will continue to be in touch with you over the next few months, sharing details of the gala including auction prize updates.  However, if you don’t have a ticket for

* Please consider attending the April 18 fine wine auction.  Tickets are still available.   The event promises to be a wonderful evening – with plenty of activities around the “Mad for Blue” theme.  And of course many fine wines for you to bid on.

Super Bowl Sunday is not just a football game, it is an event.  It’s like Christmas for diehard football fans.   It is a time to assemble together with friends, equipped with plenty of drinks and snacks to provide enough nourishment to jump around and shout for a few hours.  And, let’s not forget the super spectacular half time show (this year it’s Madonna); the over-the-top Commercials (watch for the Coca Cola Bears); and…did I mention the food and drink.

• LATE BREAKING GALA NEWS……. The Believe in Blue Gala committee would like to thank our generous community and announce that the Gala is over 90% Sold Out.  The Community responded to Principal Power’s letter inviting families to sponsor a table or gather a group of friends and form a table.  If you didn’t get a chance to purchase a Gala ticket, don’t worry, there are many other ways to support UCC and your boys including: Attending the Fine Wine Auction on April 18, 2012; Purchasing a Raffle Ticket; Donating to the Auctions – including Points, fine wine and other goods and services; and participating in the On-Line Auctions (details coming soon).  And…if you really want to go to Superbowl 2013 – comment below and we will see if we can find someone to bid for you!!

Here’s a little treat for everyone staying at home  and watching the Super Bowl with friends in 2012 – A guaranteed way to satisfy and impress your guests, with this super easy, super yummy melt-in-your-mouth-fall-off-the-bone Rib recipe.

Super-Yummy-melt-in-your-mouth-fall-off-the-bone Superbowl Ribs:

Ingredients: (- only 2 – It doesn’t get much simpler than this)

• Baby Back Ribs – I use about 3 racks
• Bar-B-Que Sauce – your favourite – I use President’s Choice – aprox 2 – 3 cups

Method:

• Heat the Broiler to High
• Broil Ribs about 10 – 15 minutes; when brown, flip, and broil the other side. (this is a key stage – gets rid of lots of fat, and sears the meat)
• Remove from oven and cool a few minutes (so you don’t burn yourself!!)
• Cut the ribs between the bones
• Layer ½ the ribs in a slow cooker, and cover with half the  Bar-B-Que Sauce.
• Place the rest of the ribs in the slow cooker and cover with the rest of the Bar-B-Que Sauce.
• Put lid on slow cooker, and cook on low for 8 – 10 hours.
• Yum…they will fall off the bone
